Faculty Bios
Liam B. Lavery, Program Co-Chair, a partner with Preston Gates & Ellis LLP, conducts a varied intellectual property practice. In addition to licensing transactions for the retail, wholesale and customized software markets, he has negotiated numerous agreements for online businesses. Mr. Lavery assists many clients from outside the high-tech arena with their entry into the online world of information and commerce.
Richard R. Rohde, Program Co-Chair, is a partner with Perkins Coie with a practice emphasis on technology, licensing, patent portfolio management, private financing and mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Rohde is a frequent guest lecturer on intellectual property, licensing and outsourcing. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and has been named as a Washington Super Lawyer by Washington Law & Politics.
Joanna Alexander is Co-CEO of Zombie, Inc., an industry-leading independent developer of action games for Xbox, PS2, PC, PS1 and Dreamcast.
Kraig Baker is a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP. His practice includes drafting and negotiating video game development contracts, publishing and consulting agreements, music recording contracts, talent agreements, live event contracts, television, film, theatre, and event production contracts.
Keith D. Boesky formed the Video Game Department at International Creative Management, which translates games to film and brings film and television talent to games. He has been the principal of Boesky & Company with clients including Universal Studios, Paramount Studios, Squaresoft and The Upper Deck Company, and Apple Computers. He has served as President of Eidos and practiced law at Cooley Godward.
James I. Charne is an attorney representing developers, designers, and all talent in all aspects of the interactive games, music, and entertainment industries. He writes a monthly column for the online newsletter of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA.org) and has served as the President and Executive Director of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences.
Don L. Daglow is President and CEO of Stormfront Studios, which develops award winning entertainment products for PS2, Xbox, PC and interactive TV. Mr. Daglow designed and programmed the first-ever computer baseball game, now in the Baseball Hall of Fame, the first simulation game and the first original play by email game in 1989.
Christopher Daley-Watson is a partner with Perkins Coie, with a practice emphasis on patent procurement, intellectual property law and software, business methods, and design protections. He is a frequent guest speaker and has authored on topics related to patents and emerging companies, electronic commerce, and Internet copyright and business issues.
Warren Gouk is Head of Mergers & Acquisitions for Cascadia Capital LLC. He also is Co-Head of the Physical Security Industry Practice Group. Prior to joining Cascadia Capital, he was in the Mergers & Acquisitions Group at Prudential Volpe Technology Group.
Reed Hinkel is Vice President of Business Development for Oregan Networks America. He develops business engagements for Oregan technology with consumer OEM’s in the Americas and coordinates all stages of the project from conception and partner identification through to contract negotiation and post sales business support.
Don Karl is a partner in the Santa Monica office of Perkins Coie, with a practice emphasis on corporate finance and securities, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic relationships, venture capital as they relate to entertainment, game and technology businesses.
Garry Kitchen, Founder, President, and CEO of Skyworks Technologies, Inc., has a lifetime of achievement as an inventor, entrepreneur and designer of interactive entertainment. Over the last 20 years, Mr. Kitchen has created interactive entertainment products for a wide variety of technologies ranging from video game consoles, to personal computers and to the Internet.
Paul Lawrence, a partner with Preston Gates & Ellis LLP, concentrates his practice on complex appellate and civil litigation, including environmental, commercial, technology and constitutional matters in federal and state courts. He chairs the firm’s Appellate Practice Group, having prevailed in numerous appeals principally in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Washington Supreme Court.
Gail Markels is Senior Vice President and General Counsel to the Entertainment Software Association where she is responsible for managing all legal issues affecting the organization as well as state public policy issues.
Deanne E. Maynard is a partner in Jenner & Block’s Washington, DC office. She is a member of the firm’s Media and First Amendment, Litigation, and Appellate and Supreme Court Practices. Ms. Maynard has successfully challenged local ordinance restricting violent video games and successfully defended video game companies against tort claims allegedly arising from school shooting incidents in Colorado and Kentucky.
Glenn C. Schroeder is a partner at Preston Gates & Ellis LLP, where he practices in the transactional areas of intellectual property law (particularly copyright), Internet and multimedia productions. Previously, he served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Assistant Secretary of Community Television of Southern California, which owns KCET/Los Angeles.
Byron Springer is Vice President/Chief Counsel, Mobile Multimedia Services at AT&T Wireless Services, Inc. where he supports AT&T’s newly established Mobile Multimedia Services group in developing and bringing to market multimedia content, applications and services over existing and next generation wireless data networks.
