Steve Tapia, Program Co-Chair, is a corporate attorney at Microsoft Corporation. He supports MSNBC Interact, The Microsoft Network, Slate Magazine, Hotmail, and the Corporate Marketing Group.
Holly K. Towle, Program Co-Chair, is a member of Preston Gates & Ellis LLP's Technology and Intellectual Property Department and counsels financial institutions and commercial vendors on a wide variety of issues and transactions. Her combined background in financial institutions, commercial law and intellectual property has created her current practice focus on electronic commerce. She is included in "An International Who's Who of Internet and E-commerce Lawyers."
Robert J. "Bob" Herbold, Luncheon Speaker, is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Microsoft Corporation. He is a member of Microsoft's Business Leadership Team, which shares responsibility with Bill Gates for broad strategic and business planning for the entire company.
Raymond T. Nimmer, Luncheon Speaker, is currently Leonard Childs Professor at the University of Houston Law Center and Co-Director of the Houston Intellectual Property and Information Law Program. He is the Reporter to the Drafting Committee on Uniform Commercial Code Article 2B-Licenses and serves as a consultant to the Office of the Legal Advisor of the U.S. State Department. He is the author of over ten books and numerous articles including "The Law of Computer Technology and Information Law."
Ian C. Ballon is a partner of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, where he concentrates his practice on intellectual property and Internet-related litigation and strategic counseling. A member of the Internet Society and the International Computer Security Association, he is the author of the two volume legal treatise, "E-Commerce and Internet Law: Forms-Text- Cases" published by Glasser Legal Works.
Thomas C. Bell is a partner at Perkins Coie where his practice emphasizes Internet and e-commerce, partnerships, LLC's and corporations, business transactions and general counsel to privately held businesses, including an industry root certification authority, Internet search engine, Internet advertising agency and retailer. His speeches and publication include "Bringing a Business On-line" at the University of Washington Law School.
Karl D. Belgum has extensive experience in a wide variety of corporate and securities matters, including litigation involving federal and state anti-fraud statutes and rules. A member of Thelen Reid & Priest LLP, Mr. Belgum's clients include investors and investment funds, issuers, financial institutions, directors and officers.
Lorin Brennan is a principal in Gray Matter, LLC, which is developing automated contracting tools and database programs to create and track licenses of rights in motion pictures. Mr. Brennan was previously vice president, business affairs, Carolco Pictures and president, Independent Producers Association.
A. Brian Dengler, Esq., is an Assistant General Council with America On-Line, Inc. and serves as the chief legal officer of AOL's subsidiary, CompuServe Interactive Services in Columbus, Ohio.
Jeff Enyart is Director of Electronic Commerce for United Parcel Service, responsible for the marketing activities of electronic commerce solutions. In addition to putting technology in place, Mr. Enyart is aligning UPS' business processes and product offerings to put customers in the driver's seat.
Debra Freeman is a partner at Morrison & Foerster where her litigation practice has involved commercial disputes in both the federal and state courts, as well as in private arbitration. She has a particular interest in following intellectual property law developments, especially patent developments related to on-line banking and other financial services and authors a column in Electronic Banking Law and Commerce Report.
Edward F. Glynn, Jr., a partner at Venable Beatjer Howard & Civilettei, LLP, practices advertising law and trade regulation. He spent 14 years at the Federal Trade Commission and is Chairman of the Consumer Protection Committee of the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association.
Linda A. Goldstein is Partner-in-Charge of Hall Dickler Kent Friedman & Wood's Advertising, Marketing and Media Department and represents clients in every sector of the advertising and marketing industry. Ms. Goldstein regularly counsels marketers on how to structure sweepstakes, games and contests and is Chair Emeritus of the Promotion Marketing Association.
Brad Handler is Associate General Council and Director of Law and Public Policy at eBay, Inc., where he is responsible for local, federal and international public policy and internal and external intellectual property. Previously Mr. Handler practiced in the business department at Cooley Godward, LLP and worked for Apple Computer's Federal Systems Group in Virginia.
Joan K. Irion the managing shareholder of Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe's San Diego Office. routinely advises businesses on the federal and state tax consequences of doing business electronically and frequently represents E-Commerce businesses before the taxing agencies and in the courts. She is a frequent author and speaker on tax issues and a Lecturer of Law at Stanford Law School.
Brian Kennan is Co-Founder of Davis Wright Tremaine's Internet and E-commerce practice group where his practice involves drafting and negotiating inbound and outbound software and content licensing, advising clients on copyright and trade secret issues, and drafting and negotiating a wide range of agreements relating to E-commerce and the Internet. He is a contributing author of the treatise Internet Law and Regulation (BNA 1999).
Jeff Koontz is a Senior Corporate Attorney with Microsoft Corporation and is responsible for providing legal services to the Games and Home Productivity business units. Mr. Koontz also administers the company's legal compliance program for privacy issues.
Ronald F. Lopez is a partner with Thelen Reid & Priest, LLP, where his practice includes counseling and complex litigation, including Year 2000, banking, electronic commerce and other technol-ogy related issues. A member of the firm's Year 2000 team, Mr. Lopez is a frequent speaker on e-commerce issues including business to business Internet billing and customer care.
Deborah K. Owen is Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel of Armstrong World Industries, Inc. A former FTC Commissioner and Associate Counsel to the President of the United States, Ms. Owen was in private practice concentrating on antitrust and consumer protection law, legislative representation and internet legal issues prior to joining Armstrong.
William Resnick is a member of Preston Gates & Ellis' Business Department where his practice focuses on banking issues, with an emphasis on deposit products and services, credit and debit cards, funds transfers, consumer credit, new bank products and delivery mechanisms, as well as data privacy and electronic commerce issues. Previously Mr. Resnick was vice president and senior counsel for Bank of America NT&SA, (dba Seafirst Bank) for 14 years.
Kent B. Thurber is a member of Davis Wright Tremaine where his health law practice emphasizes provider reimburse-ment, licensure, fraud and abuse issues and his litigation practice emphasizes health and business law, particularly complex litigation and administrative proceedings.
Joel Rothstein Wolfson is Vice President and association general counsel for The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. in Washing-ton, DC. He heads NASDAQ's E-commerce and Intellectual Property Practice Group. He also chairs the Software and Information Industry Association Committee on the proposed Uniform Computer and Information Transaction Act.
